Welcome to Ian Mac Woodturning! In this weeks turning video I used a piece of Leylandii, it's a regular on this channel but generally isn't used for anything, not even for firewood due to the high amount of resin in the wood. Instead of cutting across, try cutting lengthwise. You’ll be cutting side grain instead of end grain. Lots easier cut.

when using a chainsaw to cut a log in half do not cut from top of log to bottom. Instead cut from side to side. Most chainsaws have a rip blade. You dull your chainsaw blade very fast cutting from top to bottom of log. When cutting from top to bottom you get saw dust. When cutting from side to side you get long shavings. So when you turn and get saw dust it is not a good cut but when you get long shavings you get a better finish. Same is true for cutting a log in to two pieces. I know you are filming but cutting on your bed ways can lead to disaster. At least put a piece of wood on the bed ways to avoid scaring your bed ways and possible kick back of the chainsaw when hitting the steel.

I love it. I don't think I've ever seen this type wood turned before. Was it more smooth then not? Slower growing. Just like with fruitwood that stays the same size for many years by human intervention. More or less asking if this type wood is unique in any way. 😁
